It’s the little things that count, like wearing sunscreen. Eighty percent of premature aging is caused by the sun. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want premature aging. Aging is a natural part of growing old, you can’t prevent it, but you can slow it down.

The sun has two different types of rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays are also called aging rays, UVB rays are burning rays. UVA penetrates into your skin all the way to the dermis. This is what causes premature aging and wrinkles. UVB penetrates the outer layers of your skin causing a sunburn. Here are a few tips to help you age less.

  1. Wear sunscreen. You should wear sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30. When choosing a sunscreen make sure it is broad-spectrum. This means it will protect you from both UVA and UVB. Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before going outside into the sunshine.
  2. No tanning. Everyone loves tanning but it is so harmful for your skin. Your skin turning tan means that it’s trying to protect itself from the harsh rays. Tanning not only ages your skin but can increase your chances of skin cancer. Ninety percent of skin cancer is caused by UV rays. A safe way to tan your skin is by using self tanner or getting spray tans.
  3. Drink lots of water. When your skin is dehydrated it is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.
  4. Use anti-aging skincare products. Even if you’re 22 and have no wrinkles use some kind of anti-aging product on your skin! Prevention is key. You can’t undo aging.
  5. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol. When you smoke it decreases the oxygen level in your skin. It ages your skin very quickly, and causes you to wrinkle very easily. Drinking alcohol dehydrates your skin, making it more vulnerable to wrinkles and fine lines.

You can help your skin age less by using skincare products targeted for aging skin, regularly see a professional for treatments that slow aging such as micro-needling, photo-facials, chemical peels and staying out of the sun!

7 Tips For Healthy Skin.

Having soft glowing skin is something everyone wants but can be hard to achieve. Before I started school for master esthetics I had average skin, it wasn’t terrible but it definitely could have been better. Here are a few tips to help you achieve that glow!

1.  Wear sunscreen. I cannot say this enough! Sunscreen is so important. The sun’s harsh rays damage and age your skin. If you are not protecting your skin you are causing yourself premature aging. Aging can be slowed but it can not be reversed.

2. Drink lots of water. Here in Utah everyone can relate to dry skin. The summers are hot and dry. Your body will first start showing signs of dehydration in your skin. Your skin will become dry and flaky when it loses water. Drinking lots of water will be your best friend! Water will help your body flush out toxins, it will also help keep your breakouts to minimum.

3. Get enough sleep. While your body is sleeping it has the opportunity to focus its energy on healing itself. Without sleep it won’t have the energy it needs to help the cells in your body repair your damaged skin and remove toxins.

4. Exfoliate. When your skin cells builds up on your face it can clog pores that results in zits. I recommend exfoliating at least twice a week. My favorite way to exfoliate my face is with an enzyme mask. The enzymes will eat all the little flakes of dead skin right off your face, resulting in clean pores.

5. Diet. Your skin will reflect the way you eat. If you are eating a lot of processed food your body will not be getting the vitamins and amino acids it needs to produce healthy new cells and collagen. Collagen is what makes your skin firm and plump.

6. No makeup overnight. Wearing makeup to bed prohibits your skin from breathing properly. It clogs your pores resulting in breakouts. When removing your makeup, cleanse your face twice. Use a creamy cleanser or even a makeup wipe to break up the oils and makeup on your skin, then use your regular cleanser to help remove excess makeup, oil and dirt that was not previously removed.

7. Schedule regular facials. If you are having skin concerns an esthetician can feel and see your skin to help you improve your at home routine for maximum results. A facial helps products to penetrate deeper than they normally would on their own. Facials usually consist of cleanse, exfoliate, massage, mask, serum and moisturizer.

Healthy habits will show in your skin! If you have skincare concerns don’t be afraid to ask a professional advice on how to correct it. Love your skin!

How to Achieve Flawless Skin

Flawless beautiful skin is something that everyone wants. If you want to achieve flawless skin you have to start with a skincare routine. One of the most important things to remember about a skincare routine is that consistency is key. You HAVE to be consistent. Your skincare products will start training your skin and if you aren’t consistent it will throw everything out of balance.

A good skincare regimen will have a morning schedule and an evening schedule. A good morning routine should consist of cleanser, serum and a light moisturizer with sun protection. Do not forget the sunscreen, it is very important and will prevent your skin from premature aging. A night routine should have a cleanser, serum and a thick night cream. A thick cream should be put on at night because your body does a lot of its healing while you are sleeping. A thick cream will last on your face longer and give all those nutrients in the cream a chance to work its way into your skin while it is healing.

Something you should also take into consideration when setting up your skincare regimen is your skin type. There are four basic skin types: dry, normal, oily, and combination skin. If your skin is dry you should use products that are hydrating. With normal skin you can pretty much use any cleanser but you don’t want to over do it. If you use too many hydrating products, your skin can become too oily. If you use too many products that strip the oil off your skin you can begin to develop dry skin. For oily skin, an oil-absorbing cleanser should be used. This will help your skin throughout the day to not become so oily. At night use a cleanser that is not as harsh, if you are using a harsh cleanser morning and night it can strip your skin, causing it to become inflamed and irritated.

Now let’s talk about serums. Serums are my favorite part of my skincare routine. There are so many serums out there and you can use a different serum everyday if you wanted. Serums are used to treat a specific problem like pigmentation, aging, pollution, or dryness. If you are concerned about aging use an aging serum. I use a different serum in my morning routine than I do in my night routine. In the morning I like to use an antioxidant serum to help protect my skin from the harsh pollution in the air since I will be outside alot during the day. At night I like to use an anti-aging serum to prevent my skin from premature aging. There are so many serums out there and it is so easy to find one with any skin concern you have.

How you treat your is how your skin is going to look. Be consistent with your skin. It can be hard to take care of your skin after a long day but your skin will be happy and healthy if you do. There are millions of skincare products out there to choose from. If one of them isn’t working for your skin, try something else! Always love your skin.
